From a wedding in Durban to the mountain face of Cape Town, through vineyards and game reserves and a beach where penguins don’t care about your dry clothes. South Africa refused to be just one thing.
Durban, a Wedding
The trip began not with a camera bag, but with a suit. A friend’s wedding in Durban, shot on digital, saved for the archive. The start of something that kept getting better.
Cape Town, Arrival
We arrived and the view from the hotel stopped us immediately. Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, right there. We didn’t unpack properly. We went straight to Camps Bay. The weather was perfect, the beach was perfect, and the seafood platter at dinner made the whole day feel like it couldn’t have been planned any better.

Aquila, private game reserve
The drive to Aquila takes you through mountain vineyard country, sweeping valleys, the kind of landscape that makes you want to pull over every five minutes. And then suddenly: ostrich. Then elephant. Then lion. The Winelands to the Wilderness, all in one day.
The Long Day, with Admire
Our tour guide Admire gave us the full Cape Peninsula in a single day. The coloured houses of Bo-Kaap, UCT’s Blood & Water campus, vanilla ice cream at Kalk Bay, hake and chips at Simon’s Town, and then the penguins at Boulders Beach. Nobody warned us we’d end up in the water fully clothed. Worth every wet step.

Last Day, rainbow over the mountain
Cape Town weather changed overnight. The cable car was off. Table Mountain had disappeared into cloud. But from the hotel rooftop, a rainbow cut right across where the mountain should have been. Lion’s Head still visible. The city still beautiful. Sometimes the plan falling apart gives you a better frame.
Three cities, one game reserve, wet clothes at Boulders Beach, and a rainbow where a mountain should have been. Cape Town doesn’t give you what you planned. It gives you something better.
